In the event of a winter weather emergency, the following snow and ice removal plan will be implemented by the Township.  The Easttown Township Snow Ordinance will be enforced, with penalties ranging from $50.00 to $300.00 for each offense.   [Please click here to download Snow Ordinance 275-94 in pdf format.]

Priority for Snow Removal and Salt & Cinder Efforts

1. School bus routes

2. Through streets

3. Dead-end streets and cul-de-sacs.

Please be advised that Easttown Township does not maintain undedicated roadways or private lanes.  PennDOT, not Easttown Township, maintains the following State roads:

Waterloo Road (from Old Lancaster to Newtown)
Conestoga Road
Darby Road (SR 252)
Lancaster Avenue (SR 30)
Devon State Road
Sugartown Road

Parking

Parking of vehicles on public roadways, including cul-de-sacs, is prohibited during a snow or winter weather emergency.   A snow or winter weather emergency is in effect during any snow event of 2 inches or more, or when otherwise declared by the Township Manager.  Property owners and tenants with insufficient off-street parking must apply for parking permits through the Easttown Police Department.

Driveways and Sidewalks

Snow plow operators cannot control the accumulation of snow in front of your driveway during winter weather operations.  If you intend to clear your driveway prior to the street being plowed, you run the risk of being blocked-in when the streets are cleared.  Township Crews are unable to clear individual driveways.  [Please click here to download a graphic of PennDot Recommendations for clearing snow from driveways.]

Sidewalks must be cleared of snow to a width of two feet within 24 hours and safe traction for pedestrians must be maintained.  Residents are prohibited from depositing snow on any public highway.

Mailboxes

Plowed snow may damage mailboxes.  Wet, heavy snow increases the chance of damage to mailboxes.  To reduce the potential for damage, please make sure your mailbox is secured tightly on a sturdy post.  Residents are reminded that damage occurring from plowed snow is the property owner's responsibility.

The Township crews make every effort to avoid causing damage to mailboxes and plow operators take precautions to avoid hitting mailbox posts.  Experience has shown that reduced visibility during a storm makes it difficult for a plow operator to see a post in time to avoid striking it.  If your mailbox is damaged as a result of actually being hit by a plow truck, the Township will inspect the mailbox, verify that it was hit by one of our plow trucks, and compensate the resident in an amount not to exceed $150.00.  Please report the damage to the Township as soon as you become aware of it and please do not discard the mailbox before the Township has had an opportunity to inspect it.
